GodwinGroup’s Philip Shirley Bestowed AAF’s Silver Medal

JACKSON, MS (March 2, 2015) – The American Advertising Federation Jackson has honored GodwinGroup Chairman and CEO Philip Shirley by bestowing him with the Silver Medal Award.

The Silver Medal is the most prestigious individual award presented by AAF Jackson, and recognizes an advertising professional who has made outstanding contributions to further industry standards, creative excellence and social concern in the community. Honorees are chosen by a committee of previous Silver Medal recipients, past presidents and AAF members at large.

“For more than 25 years Philip has been an important part of the Jackson advertising and marketing community,” said Jeff Russell, Godwin’s president. “He has managed a broad range of branding and advertising for our clients, transformed our agency from a traditional firm into one of digital innovation and strategic planning, and enabled us to be named the “Go To” Agency in Mississippi by AdWeek.

“His contributions to his company, his profession and community are well demonstrated, and he certainly is deserving of his honor,” Russell added.

Shirley joined GodwinGroup in 1989. He was named CEO in 2007 and chairman in 2010. Through the years Shirley has led projects for such clients as Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, Louisville Slugger, Russell Athletic, State Farm, BP America, Trustmark Bank and Baptist Health Systems. In 2014 he was inducted into the Southern Public Relations Hall of Fame.

Shirley is past president of the America’s Region of the $4 billion MAGNET (Marketing and Advertising Global Network), the world’s most successful independent ad agency network with more than 40 affiliates globally.

He has also been an active supporter of the arts and economic development on both the state and regional levels. Shirley is a board member of the Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership, the Mississippi Economic Council and the Alabama Writers’ Forum. He has previously served on the boards of the Mississippi Sports Foundation, the Central Mississippi Red Cross, Epilepsy Foundation of Mississippi and Multiple Sclerosis Society-Alabama. Shirley earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in American Studies with the University of Alabama. He has written or co-authored five books, including the recent crime thriller, The White Lie.
