In Japan, the word kokoku, which stands for advertisement, came into use in 1890s. Seiji Yuzawa, who was the first president, established Kokokusha in 1888. That is to say, the word kokoku and Kokokusha were created about the same time and have evolved at the same pace. Yuzawa established Kokokusha believing that the advertising industry had great potential and was essential to the development of Japanese society. The early history of our company was all about the industry development. We had tried to raise people’s awareness for the importance of advertisement all the time and paved the way for the new industry. With Japan’s rapid progress as a nation, the advertising industry started to attract a lot of attention. We started to build its foundation as a company undertaking many memorable advertisements such as those for cigarettes, which were sold in the open market then. Eventually, Kokokusha was positioned in the center of the industry. In 1930, the achievements of Seiji Yuzawa, who founded Kokokusha and pioneered the advertising industry, won the Gobusatasho, the highest honor in the advertising industry, from His Imperial Highness Higashikuninomiya. In 1937, the 50th anniversary of the company’s establishment, Kokokusha was incorporated to be as Kokokusha Co., Ltd. In 1947, we resumed our business after overcoming the ordeal of World War II. After the war, we executed an organizational reform and established a network throughout Japan-in Sapporo, Sendai, Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, Hiroshima and Fukuoka-in accordance with the advent of broadcasting media. Moreover, we actively responded to clients’ growing needs by the way of expanding Planning, Marketing and Creative Section, which also deal with sales promotions and promotional events. Thereafter, Kokokusha evolved together with the advertising industry while establishing its long history and achievements. In 1988, we were the first advertising company, which marked the 100th anniversary of its foundation.
